چکیده

the seasonal shift of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone that modulates deep convection over the anomalous SST. This demonstrates the importance of the mean seasonal atmospheric circulation in modulating the remote teleconnections from the central-western Pacific warming in the model. However, it is suggested here that the cooling in the eastern Pacific associated with El Niño Modoki counteracts the atmospheric response driven by the central western Pacific warming, generating a consequent weaker connection to the tropical Atlantic compared to the stronger link during Eastern Pacific El Niño events. Finally we show that the modeled Pacific–tropical Atlantic teleconnections to an eastern Pacific warming depends strongly on the underlying seasonal cycle of SST.

Global Warming–Induced Changes in El Niño Teleconnections over the North Pacific and North America

El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) induces climate anomalies around the globe. Atmospheric general circulation model simulations are used to investigate how ENSO-induced teleconnection patterns during boreal winter might change in response to global warming in the Pacific–North American sector. As models disagree on changes in the amplitude and spatial pattern of ENSO in response to global war...

Global Teleconnections in Response to a Shutdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation*

The global response to a shutdown of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is investigated by conducting a water-hosing experiment with a coupled ocean–atmosphere general circulation model. In the model, the addition of freshwater in the subpolar North Atlantic shuts off the AMOC. The intense cooling in the extratropical North Atlantic induces a widespread response over the glo...

El Niño/La Niña and Sahel Precipitation During the Middle Holocene

Simulations with a synchronously coupled atmosphere-land-ocean-sea ice model indicate El Niño/La Niña-like events in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean during the middle Holocene (6 ka) with similar intensities and frequencies as at present (0 ka). July-August-September Sahel precipitation shifts northward as expected from proxy data. For presentday, interannual-decadal variability of western S...

Global Warming Attenuates the Tropical Atlantic-Pacific Teleconnection

Changes in global sea surface temperature (SST) since the end of last century display a pattern of widespread warming intercepted by cooling in the eastern equatorial Pacific and western coasts of the American continent. Studies have suggested that the cooling in the eastern equatorial Pacific may be partly induced by warming in the North Atlantic. However, it remains unknown how stable this in...

Synoptic climatology and the analysis of atmospheric teleconnections

Over recent decades, analyses of the structure and impact of atmospheric teleconnections have substantially increased our understanding of the climate system and the role of climate variability. Moving beyond simple correlations between teleconnection indices and temperature and precipitation anomalies, synoptic climatology has been able to provide insight on the spatiotemporal manifestation of...
